The nun Mother Teresa, known for working with the desperately poor in India, is to be declared a saint at a ceremony in the Vatican.
Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to fill St Peter's Square to see Pope Francis lead the ceremony.Two miraculous cures of the sick after Mother Teresa's death in 1997 have been attributed to her intercession.In India, there will be ceremonies at the Missionaries of Charity, the order she founded in Kolkata (Calcutta).Pope Francis will lead a Mass and Canonisation in Saint Peter's Square at 10:30 local time (08:30 GMT).Mother Teresa founded a sisterhood that runs 19 homes, and won the Nobel Peace Prize.But she was not without her critics, as some people noted a lack of hygiene in the hospitals run by her sisterhood, and said she accepted money from dictators for her charity work.She died in 1997 - aged 87 - and was beatified in 2003, the first step to sainthood.In 2002, the Vatican ruled that an Indian woman's stomach tumour had been miraculously cured after prayers to Mother Teresa.The Pope cleared the way for sainthood last year when he recognised a second miracle attributed to her.

Born in 1910 to ethnic Albanian parents, Agnese Gonxha Bojaxhiu grew up in what is now the Macedonian capital, Skopje, but was then part of the Ottoman Empire.Aged 19, she joined the Irish order of Loreto and in 1929 was sent to India, where she taught at a school in Darjeeling under the name of Therese.In 1946 she moved to Kolkata to help the destitute and, after a decade, set up a hospice and a home for abandoned children.She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. The sisterhood now has 4,500 nuns worldwide.She achieved worldwide acclaim for her work in Kolkata's slums, but her critics accused her of pushing a hardline Catholicism, mixing with dictators and accepting funds from them for her charity.It often takes decades for people to reach sainthood after their death, but beatification was rushed through by Pope John Paul II. Pope Francis was known to be keen to complete the process during the Church's Holy Year of Mercy, which runs to November 2016.

Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), Dr Govinda KC, has reiterated his commitment to a stage hunger strike if his demands put before the government are not met.At a meeting with his supporter doctors and journalists here today, he expressed disappointment for the government's apathy to respond to his demands though the Prime Minister, Health Minister and other high-ranking government officials were already briefed about the demands.He claimed that his recommendation to establish medical college in rural areas is practical to maximize benefits to the helpless people of villages. At least seven persons were killed in landslides triggered by torrential rains across the country in the past 24 hours. Four persons, including three of a family, were buried to death in separate incidents of landslide in Taplejung Municipality on Friday night. Dozens of cattle, goat and sheep were killed in the disaster. At least 75 families have been displaced.
Bimala Magar, 28, and her sons Manoj, 9, and Lalit, 7, died when a massive landslide buried their house in Taplejung-2, said police. The victims were sleeping when the disaster occurred.
Security personnel and locals plucked the bodies from the debris on Saturday morning. Locals had informed police about the incident after they heard the cries of children from the buried house. Security personnel’s efforts to rescue them alive, however, went in vain.
Similarly, a woman, who was later identified as Dil Kumari Palungwa, died after a landslide swept away her house in Taplejung-8. The victim’s sister Krishna Kumari, who sustained serious injuries, is receiving treatment at the district hospital, said police.
According to Chief District Officer Chakrapani Pandey, 42 families of ward no. 7 have been displaced. The displaced people are taking shelter at a local school. Displaced families from Suketar, Bejambu and Khodambu have taken refuge at their relatives’ houses.
“It rained throughout Friday night. Had the villagers not moved to safer places on time, there could have been more casualties,” said Nirmala Bhattarai, a local teacher. The district received 137mm of rain on Friday night. Transportation services have come to a halt along the Taplejung stretch on the Mechi Highway.
On Saturday, a couple was buried to death in a landslide at Kulung-9 in Bhojpur. Bharat Rai, 58, and his wife Rammani, 54, died when the landslide buried their house, said police.
In Myagdi, a landslide claimed life of an elderly. Om Prasad Bhattachan, 72, died when the landslide buried a shed in Devisthan-5 on Saturday.
